A Lenten morning Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
I offer you the day ahead of me: all of my hopes, fears, conversations, struggles, and blessings.
Help me to make myself 100% available to you. Give me the grace to say yes to you in the big things and in the small things of the day. Open my eyes to see the needs of the people around me, the people I will come across in my family, in my work, and in every small interaction. And give me the wisdom to seek you and your dream for my life in every small moment of this day.
Amen.
Dear Families
Our Holy Spirit Schools came together last Thursday 27th March for a really fabulous and enjoyable Combined Cross-Country event. The weather was great and the track exciting for the runners. We had lots of parents and grandparents joining in with cheering too! With most of the students in a great vantage point for spectating, I was thrilled with the genuine carnival atmosphere evident that day with lots of cheering and encouragement for the runners. The School Spirit was well and truly obvious as we came together as one! My sincere thanks to Miss Williams and Mrs Richardson for their meticulous planning and to all the staff across both schools for their enthusiasm in supporting all our students. My thanks to our volunteers who so generously assisted Mrs Freeman and Mrs Green with preparing and delivering our numerous Sausage Sizzle orders for the students to all enjoy.
My only request is for parents to please support our schools as we try to continually build a really great sense of community where we think of others. One way of doing this is to stay with your children until the end of a carnival rather than leaving after your child's event. At the Cross Country, after what was a wonderful coming together of both schools, it was however disappointing to see parents taking their children home early. Respectfully, whilst it is a parent's right to take their children home from school/event, it doesn't mean it is the right thing to do. On Thursday, the events were running ahead of schedule, however, when parents began to take their children before the the end of the final event, thereby denying the last group of runners the opportunity to run with cheering and encouragement which they had helped provide to all the other age groups prior, it was disappointing. Please, can we work closely together and help all our students participate to the best of their ability and to feel valued by our community, by the simple commitment to stay at a carnival/event until it is concluded. It would also be very much appreciated if parents could offer/look for ways to assist and support staff at these events by helping with packing up. There were several gazebos, tables, chairs, PA systems, tarps, signage etc to be packed up on Thursday. It was left to staff (who had already been at the venue early in the morning to set everything up) whilst other staff looked after all the students. If we look to please help one another and be a little more mindful of what might need to be set up or packed away following an event, this simple action can truly enhance our school spirit and even strengthen our parent-school partnerships. Thank you.
Professional Learning at Holy Spirit Schools
Over the term our school staff have come together for various Professional Learning opportunities which has enabled greater collaboration across both sites. Our Learning Support Teams have come together; our RECs collaborate when planning our liturgical celebrations; we have PB4L teams at both sites keen to build an explicit and effective Behaviour Expectations Matrix and process; our administration staff have supported one another by working across sites and our Executive Team across both sites continue to learn and grow together.
Staff inclusive of our Learning Support Assistants, came together to learn from our Behaviour Support Education Officers about brain development and some suggested effective ways to respond to students who have experienced trauma. Kurri staff have completed their CPR training refresher and Abermain Staff have completed additional training for Diabetes Care. Both schools have a focus on establishing effective PB4L processes to foster a culture of positive behaviour and have worked with our Education Officer overseeing this important element of successful schools across the diocese. In coming weeks, we will welcome Fiona Foley from Mathematics Association of NSW who will again partner with teachers at both schools for demonstration lessons in best practice for teaching mathematics K-6.
Staffing Update
From the beginning of term 2 we welcome Ms Alison Smith who, following Merit Selection has been appointed to the role of Pedagogical Mentor across both schools. This important role will see Alison engaging with all our teachers through Professional Learning Team meetings each week; through modelling best practice teaching techniques and implementing the use of The Impact Cycle across our schools fostering a culture of teaching excellence. Alison will be at Abermain each Wednesday and at Kurri on a Thursday and Friday.
Code of Conduct
Recently we have experienced some students across K-6 becoming reactive either by responding with inappropriate verbal responses or by using hands on and physical aggression to social situations on the playground; when playing games where the rules are not clear or when students are unwilling to accept when they are 'out'. It is part of normal childhood development to learn to navigate conversations, listen to the points of view of others and take ownership of mistakes that are made. What is not acceptable at Holy Spirit Schools is any form of verbal or physical aggression or violence against other students or staff. Our School Agreements are consistent across both school sites and will be adhered to: I am safe. I am respectful. I am responsible. I am a learner and at Holy Spirit Kurri we have a fifth value-I am a disciple of Jesus. Inappropriate behaviour has a consequence. Parents and carers we seek your support to help us ensure a safe learning environment for all students and all staff.
Please remind your child that it is never acceptable to speak rudely to a staff member; to shout at a staff member; or to strike a staff member at our schools. Alarmingly, we have also had instances recently of verbal aggression by parents and students aimed at staff and I remind our communities of our Catholic Schools Code of Conduct.

Abermain Student Led Conferences Stage One Week 11
Parents and Carers are reminded to please book in to attend your child's Student Led Conference for Year 1 and 2 students next week. Bookings are via Compass. The students have reflected on their learning in term one and set some learning goals which they would like to share with you. These conferences are led by the students themselves, and it is important that every child in Stage One has this opportunity to share their learning focus for term 2. Attendance is an expectation and your child's class teacher will be practicing with each child in readiness for this important process in their learning. Parents of Kinder parents will receive a phone call from the Kinder Teachers from across these next two weeks when they will share with you some positive news about your child's first term in kindergarten. Kinder students will prepare a learning goal ready for Semester Two.
At the end of term 2, each student will receive a written Semester One report and have the opportunity in Week 2 term 3 to meet with your child's teacher at a Parent/Teacher Meeting K-2.
Kurri Yr 3-6 school have not as yet implemented Student Led Conferences but will work toward this same process for 2026. Any parents/carers who are wanting to speak to their child's teacher are encouraged to make an appointment or request a return phone call from your child's teacher. Please be aware that at the time of Semester One reports being sent home in June, Parent/ Teacher meetings will be offered across Week 10 of term 2.
The separation of Parent/Teacher meeting weeks at Kurri Week 10 Term 2 and then Abermain Week 2 Term 2 is to ensure parents are not having to make appointments across both schools in the same week. We hope this makes family life a little easier.
Easter Raffle
In these tough economic times, we are grateful to all families at both schools for your generous donations of Easter Eggs for the Easter Raffles at both schools. Parents are asked to donate if you can. Tickets are available for sale on Qkr and the proceeds from Abermain will go toward purchasing new soccer goals and at Kurri new sport equipment for use at the field. Thank you for your support!
Easter Season
As we will soon turn our attention to Holy Week and our preparation for Easter, all families are invited to join us for our Holy Week liturgies at both schools. Please see dates and times later in this newsletter.
Thank you for your support during this busy initial term and I hope that parents all know that you are always welcome to meet with me to share feedback or any great ideas you have for our Holy Spirit Schools.
Wishing all our families a safe school holiday and a Happy and Holy Easter!

Regular school attendance, including Fridays, is essential for your child's academic success, well-being, and skill development. It ensures a structured routine, fosters positive relationships, and helps build life skills like time management and perseverance.
Missing school can create learning gaps and make it harder to stay on track. Additionally, regular attendance fulfills legal obligations and supports your child's educational journey.
Thank you for prioritising their attendance—it plays a vital role in their growth and success.

Our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) focus for the last two weeks of Term 1 is:
"I respond to adults positively",
part of the "I am respectful" domain.
In weeks 10 and 11, students learn how to respond positively to adults during situations where they are asked to do, or avoid doing, something. They will explore scenarios, such as being asked to pick up a piece of paper and practice constructive responses. For example, instead of saying, "It's not mine!" students practice replying, "It's not mine, but I can help keep our playground clean."
The lesson encourages respectful and cooperative interactions with adults.

The Significance of Lent and Easter
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we journey through the liturgical year, we find ourselves in the most sacred and significant season of the Church's calendar: Lent and Easter. This period is a profound time of reflection, renewal, and celebration of our Christian faith.
This week the Catholic Church commemorate Christ’s death and burial. Ancient writers from the 2nd century documented this custom as far back as Apostolic times! The Early Church celebrated this as the “Great Week” with much reverence.
During Holy Week we remember the last week of Jesus’ life on earth in the lead up to Easter. Lent the 40-day journey of self-denial, penance, prayer, and fasting, where we prepare our hearts and minds for the joyous celebration of Easter is coming to an end and our focus shifts to the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Holy Week commences with Palm Sunday, with Jesus’ triumphant return to Jerusalem. Sundown on Holy Thursday to sundown on Easter Sunday is known as The Easter Triduum. This is considered the most solemn part of the liturgical year. The Easter Triduum recounts the life of Jesus on the last three days of his life – the events of his coming to Death and his Resurrection – this is known as the ‘Paschal Mystery’.
The ‘Paschal Mystery’ connects us to the ancient Jewish Passover tradition which recalls how God brough the Jews out of slavery in Egypt, noted in the Old Testament as the spotless Lamb being slaughtered and consumed at the Passover meal, with its blood marking the doors of these homes so that the angel of death passed over their homes because of this sacrifice. Jesus at the Last Supper himself becomes the Paschal Lamb to reconcile the sins of the world with God.
We hope you can join us as we move through Jesus experiences during Holy Week, the final week of his life on earth - on Friday 11th April from 10:30am at Holy Spirit Infants and St. Francis Xavier’s Church and enjoy a shared picnic recess with us, please extend the invitation to your children’s loved ones.
We wish you all a very safe, happy and holy Easter break with your families. We look forward to celebrating Easter with you all early next term during Week 1 on Thursday 1st May at 12:50 in St Francis Xavier’s Church.

Thank you to the families who are making a concerted effort to follow our uniform requirements and expectations. Below is a table of the expected uniforms that our students at Kurri wear on the appropriate days.
During Term 2, we will return wearing the summer uniform and will notify parents via Compass when we will move into our winter uniform. This is always dependent on the weather rather than a set date for the changeover. Please ensure your child has the correct pieces, including ties, for winter. Soft shell jackets (a new uniform item available from Flannagan's) will be available to wear as part of the winter uniform. Girls long sleeved monogrammed shirts are also soon to be available.
Our uniform expectations also extend to hair and jewellery. If your child’s hair is long enough to touch their collar, it must be pulled back/up, regardless of gender. This is a safety and hygiene issue. Jewellery is to consist of one pair of plain sleepers or stud earrings, one plain gold/silver bracelet, and one plain gold/silver necklace. Hair accessories are to be in school colours. We pride ourselves on our smart uniform and have expectations that it will be worn correctly.
Term 2 sport uniform days will be Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Foyer Display
Thank you to Year Five for their foyer display on the season of Lent.

Lent
We are nearing the end of the church season of Lent. Throughout Lent we are encouraged to reflect upon our lives and our actions. We are called to fast from qualities of anger, selfishness and insincerity but to instead feast on being patient, compassionate and truthful.
The season of Lent ends on Easter Sunday where we acknowledge and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.
St Patrick’s Day
On the 17th of March each year we recognise the feast of St Patrick. Students learnt about St Patrick who is the Patron Saint of Ireland and is known for Introducing Christianity to Ireland. He was a priest who converted many Irish people to Christianity and often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity – The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
St Patrick was a humble, religious and gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us.

St Joseph’s Day
On the 19th of March we recognised the feast of St Joseph- the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. We honour his faithfulness to God and recognise his care for Mary and Jesus, placing their needs before his own.
St Joseph worked hard as a carpenter and was a compassionate, caring man who respected God and listened to his call to look after Mary. Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church, families, fathers, travellers, and working people. We recognise the feast of St Joseph due to our school's heritage. Our school began in 1908 in Kurri Kurri NSW and originally was under the patronage of St Joseph and led by the Sisters of St Joseph. In 1991, the name of the school was changed to Holy Spirit Primary School bringing it in line with the Parish name.
Students learnt about St Joseph and created an artwork in their classrooms.

Project Compassion
Throughout Lent we participate in the almsgiving initiative of Project Compassion run by charity organisation Caritas Australia.
The funds raised in Project Compassion are utilised by Caritas Australia to help alleviate poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity in the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in the world.
This is a friendly reminder to all families of this year’s Project Compassion initiative that occurs during Lent. The theme this year is “Unite Against Poverty”. One box per family was sent home earlier this term. There’s plenty of information on the Caritas Australia website if you would like to read up about the feel-good case studies that our money goes to help. Read their inspiring tales and see how your generosity makes a difference.
Here's a link to have a look at some of the faces of the people who are helped through Project Compassion. This story is about Toefuata'iga from Samoa. Toefuata'iga, a 13-year-old student in Samoa, faced severe challenges and disruptions to her learning due to water scarcity. After Caritas Australia’s partner Caritas Samoa installed a 10,000 litre water tank at her school, Toefuata'iga and her classmates saw improved health and more consistent class attendance.
https://www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion/toefuataiga-story
Thank you in advance to all those that generously give what they can to this great cause.
Project Compassion boxes may be returned to the office labelled with the student’s name and class by the end of the term.

Mini Vinnies Ice -Cream
In support of the Project Compassion almsgiving initiative, our Mini Vinnies leaders have decided to sell cream cones on Thursday 10th April. Scoops of ice cream with sprinkles or milo will be sold for $2 with all proceeds going to Project Compassion.

Holy Week
During Week 11 (7th to 11th April), students will be acknowledging and celebrating Holy Week. Each day students will gather to recall the events of Holy Week including Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, the Garden of Gethsemane and Good Friday. Holy Week is the time to stop and remember Jesus. We gather together in memory of Jesus to share again the story of His life and death. We gather to remember, to love one another and to give thanks.
The school will celebrate Holy Week with a re-enactment each day in the Church. Celebrating this as a whole school community is important so thank you to all teachers and classes in advance for preparing for their parts. Holy Week is an important event in our Church’s liturgical calendar.

Highlights in Sport
The past two weeks have been filled with exciting sporting achievements, with our students showcasing their talents in various ways—whether competing in Cross-Country, cheering on their peers, or participating in Diocesan Trials.
School Cross Country
Last Thursday, our school held its first combined Cross-Country event, bringing together both our Infants and Primary schools. It was a wonderful community day, celebrating the talents and determination of our students.
Every child should be congratulated for the way they represented our school—whether by challenging themselves to participate, pushing their limits, or striving to achieve their best times. It was inspiring to see so many students giving their all and supporting one another. A special mention goes to our Year 6 students, who demonstrated outstanding leadership by supporting our Kindergarten students throughout the event. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and happy students throughout the day.
Thank you to our volunteers and everyone who helped make the day a success. We would also like to extend our appreciation to Kurri Kurri Rugby League Club for allowing us to use their grounds and facilities—your generosity helped make this event possible.
We have over 1000 photos to share with families from our Cross Country. These will be shared at a later date.

Cross Country Abermain
Last Thursday, our students participated in a fantastic Cross Country event in collaboration with Holy Spirit, Kurri. The day was filled with excitement, incredible energy, and plenty of water to keep everyone refreshed!
Our Kinder students tackled the challenge of completing one lap around the football field, while Year 1 students demonstrated their stamina by running two laps. A big thank you to the Year 6 students from Kurri, who guided our younger runners, showing them the course and cheering them on every step of the way.
Year 2 students impressed us all by running a challenging 2km course. Special congratulations to Kai Berry, Jak Carberry, Egan Tipper, and Georgia Lodge, who have qualified for the Dio Cross Country event next term in May.
What an amazing day it was, filled with teamwork, perseverance, and great memories!

Kindergarten Successful Foundations
In the first five weeks of Term 1, our Kindergarten students successfully completed the Successful Foundations program. This initiative helped our young learners transition smoothly into the school environment, establishing routines and building lasting friendships.
As part of the program, students engaged in reflective play, drawing pictures to tell their stories. Over the five weeks, they enhanced their drawings by adding labels, further developing their storytelling skills. We are excited to share some wonderful examples of these play reflections with you.

Harmony Day 2025 Abermain
Earlier this term, we celebrated Harmony Day at Holy Spirit Infants. Our students were excited to come out of uniform to mark the occasion where 'Everyone Belongs' - The theme for this year's Harmony Day.
Amongst the sea of orange and rainbow outfits, we also had some students come in traditional dress and clothing that represents their culture. They were very excited to share what they were wearing!
At morning assembly, we had a special prayer to mark the occasion, led by our EALD students. Four of these students shared where their families are from and a fun fact about their culture.
Caleb - My family is from the Philippines. We have lots of interesting food and fun dances.
An - My family is from Vietnam. We celebrate Lunar New Year in January.
Lawrance - My family is from Syria. I can say my name and age in Arabic.
During the middle session, we did not let the rain stop us, we were still able to complete our activities (just slightly modified!). Students learnt a traditional Indian dance called Bhangra, they learnt the Osa (a traditional Polish dance) and they even learnt how to say hello in different languages! (You might have to test them sometime if they can remember some of them!).
We finished off the day with some craft to mark this special day of cultural diversity. When you are visiting for Student Led Conferences next week, be sure to check them out on display in classrooms.
Thank you all for your participation!
Miss Jessica Laczkowski (ATSI Teacher) & Mrs Nikki Fredsall (EALD Teacher)

Harmony Day - Kurri Kurri
Harmony Day was celebrated in our school last Friday. The theme was ‘Everyone Belongs’. The special day was held to acknowledge and promote inclusivity, respect, and belonging for all Australians, regardless of their cultural background. The children participated in a Paint to Music activity and a Country Rally where they had to find and record information. Despite the weather, it didn’t dampen the enjoyment the children had for the activities.

Year 2 Excursion to Awabakal Environmental Education Centre
Our Year 2 students recently had an exciting excursion to the Awabakal Environmental Education Centre in Dudley. Located within the stunning Awabakal Nature Reserve, this coastal bushland setting provided a fantastic opportunity for students to explore how different environments support the needs of living things.
Throughout the day, students worked in teams to conduct guided science investigations and classify various animals found in both wet and dry environments. Some of the engaging activities included:
🍂 Leaf Litter Survey – In the dry environment, students classified invertebrates and learned how different species thrive in unique conditions.
🚶 Nature Trail Walk – As they explored the trail, students investigated the needs of both plants and animals in their natural habitat.
🛠 Cultural Connections – The excursion also provided a wonderful opportunity to learn about Aboriginal perspectives, with students examining traditional tools, materials, and plants used by the Awabakal people.
It was an amazing day of hands on learning, teamwork, and appreciation for our local environment. A big thank you to the AEEC staff who supported this fantastic experience!

Library News Abermain

What an exciting start to the year! The Easter school holidays are just around the corner and the students have been learning many things in the library this term!
Kindergarten have been learning some valuable life lessons from Aesop’s Fables. We have been comparing these beloved stories with modern versions, and it is so heart warming to hear many students have engaged with the originals in their infancy.
Year 1 have been looking at different cultural texts and learning how to use a laptop for research. We have a subscription with World Book Online that allows the students to find reliable, current information at their reading level.
Year 2 have been learning how to become responsible digital citizens. They understand that not all information should be shared online and know how they can keep themselves safe.
During the holidays, the school library may be closed, however, public libraries and the Sora app are other avenues to attain and engage with quality literature.
To access Sora please follow these directions:

Students will need to know their school username and password to access this free app.
