And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Acts 2:2–4
Dear Families,
On the Feast of Pentecost we say - Happy birthday! Today, as we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, we also celebrate the birth of the Church. Thus, today is a celebration of your membership in the life of the Church. We profess our faith in the Church every Sunday. We profess that we believe in “one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” What exactly does this mean? First, it means that by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, those who profess faith in Christ are united as “one.” This oneness is a spiritual union that will endure for eternity. It is unbreakable and restores us to the life we were created to live. That is, a life of union with God and others, a communion of humanity with God.
As one family, the Church is also “holy.” Holiness is another way of saying that we are made whole by the blood of Christ, sharing in His redemption. By His mercy, our sins are forgiven and we become children of the Father in Heaven, sharing the eternal life of the Son.
The word “catholic” refers to the truth that the offer of salvation is given to all. It is a universal calling given to all people who will accept this gift. God did not come to save only a few but all, and many will accept this gift of salvation.
We are “apostolic,” in that God chose to establish His Church through the mediation of His Apostles. The work of the Apostles continues today. As a member of the one Body of Christ, you are also invited by God to enlarge His family through the sharing of the Gospel and by your life of prayer. You are called and sent, and this takes place by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that we especially celebrate today.
Pray to the Holy Spirit, so that You can help share the saving message of the Gospel to those whom God wants to reach through you.
We celebrated this special Feast of Pentecost together all students K-6 and all staff, along with parents and parishioners with a beautiful mass at Holy Spirit Church Kurri Kurri on Thursday 5th June. The mass, presided by Fr Solomon, was filled with joyful singing, prayerful reverence and silent reflection as we came together to worship and celebrate the many gifts of the Holy Spirit present within us all. Thank you to our RECs Miss Spencer and Mrs Haines, Mrs McFarlane and the Infants students who led the congregation with fabulous actions to our favourite Holy Spirit songs. There are photos further in this newsletter for you to enjoy!
Semester One Reports K-6
As we approach the last few weeks of semester one, our teachers are preparing your child’s semester one formal report. The report for Early Stage One (Kinder) is different to the report for Stage One, Stage 2 and Stage 3, and these will be all released on Compass on the 27th June. The following week 30th June -4th July is set aside for parents seeking a Parent-Teacher meeting with your child’s teacher at Kurri for Years 3-6 students. Parents will be able to make an appointment via Compass during the week of 23rd June when time slots will be made available. If you’d prefer to speak over the phone simply email your child’s teacher with the request for a call and they will call you at some stage during that last week of term when they are available to do so.
The Early Stage One reports (Kinder) use a three point scale for reporting progress, whilst the Stage One-Three reports use a five point scale. Progress in each of the seven Key Learning Areas – Religious Education; English, Maths, Science, HSIE, Creative Arts and PDHPE is reported on. Teachers gather assessment data, work samples and observations to inform their report writing. Teachers will also provide feedback about your child’s efforts and their learning habits which are very important for academic success.
It is very important that parents and carers speak with your child about their report and celebrate their learning success, their efforts and their learning dispositions. Where you feel your child may be able to improve, provides an opportunity to give encouragement rather than to speak negatively about the progress report. As adults our negative language can sometimes be damaging to a young student or can set them up with inaccurate beliefs about themselves e.g. “Mum said she didn’t like maths so I don’t either”; “Dad said it doesn’t matter if I don’t listen very well because he didn’t when he was at school”. All our students are learners and will want to hear that you are proud of their efforts so far.
Parent Teacher Interviews at Abermain will be offered in Week 2 of Term 3 in our efforts to not place too many demands on parents having meetings across the two schools in the same week. Bookings for these meetings will be available to be made via Compass in Week 1 of term 3.
We will seek your feedback about whether this separation of Parent Teacher Meetings that we are trialing, works for parents or whether you'd prefer them in the same week at both schools. I do encourage all parents/carers to meet with your child's teacher please.
Staffing News Update Abermain
We are having a "baby boom" at Holy Spirit Infants and there is a lot of excitement. At the end of this week we will farewell Mrs Meagan Edwards (KW) who will take maternity leave in readiness for welcoming her second little bundle of joy to her family in the next few weeks. Mrs Ashlee Gossip has kindly agreed to teach KW fulltime until the end of the term. At the end of this term we will farewell both Mrs Sarah Haines (REC, 1W) and Mrs Natahsa Clements (Part time LST) who will each take maternity leave as well. Wishing these special women all the joy, love and laughter as you each prepare to welcome your new little one! Your dedication and passion supporting our early learners at Abermain will no doubt shine just as brightly in this journey of parenthood. May this time be filled with beautiful moments, well deserved rest (at least at the start), and endless happiness. Best wishes for a smooth and wonderful maternity leave!
We are currently recruiting for these temporary positions in our school for Semester 2 and will notify parents when new appointments are made following merit selection processes.
PB4L Professional Development Day for Staff
On Friday 6th June, our staff from both Holy Spirit Schools spent the day together engaging in a review of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) frameworks at both schools. Positive Behaviours for Learning (PB4L) is a widely adopted framework in Australian schools to improve student behaviour and engagement. It's an evidence-based approach that focuses on creating a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment at each school. Our day of learning was facilitated by Craig Moore (Education Officer Behaviour Support at CSO) and teachers and learning support assistants collaborated and planned in response to behavioural data we are collating from both schools. Our staff revisited the purpose and intention of our commitment to positive behaviour frameworks and processes in order to best support all students in our schools. As we work together to ensure consistent expectations across both schools, we are also committed to a focus in each school, which although separate, is in fact clearly aligned. Both schools have a specific scope and sequence for learning and have a clear focus for each fortnight. PB4L aims to help schools improve social, emotional, behavioural, and academic outcomes for students and we are committed to this.

Attendance
The Impact of Term-Time Holidays on Learning
Taking time off during the school term might seem small, but those absences add up more than you might think. Taking just one four-week holiday per year equates to a full year of lost learning over a child’s school life!
Regular attendance is key to academic progress, social development, and maintaining routine. Every school day contributes to building knowledge, skills, and confidence. Gaps in learning can be harder to fill, and students may miss crucial lessons that support their long-term success.
We encourage families to plan holidays outside of term time wherever possible to ensure students stay engaged and on track with their learning journey.
Thank you for supporting your child’s education and helping them make the most of their school years!

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) focus for weeks 7 and 8 of Term 2 is part of the "I am responsible" domain:
"I wear our uniform with pride!"
At Holy Spirit Infants School Abermain, we love seeing our students looking sharp in their uniforms! It’s not just about following a rule, it’s about showing respect for our school, feeling part of a team, and embracing responsibility.
Wearing the uniform properly teaches important life skills like self-discipline and professionalism, which will come in handy later on. Plus, when students take pride in their appearance, it boosts confidence and encourages a positive attitude.
Our uniform helps create a strong sense of belonging, reminding everyone that we’re in this together. Students represent our school wherever they go, and dressing neatly is a great way to show their commitment to learning and respect for others.
Thank you to all our parents for supporting this message at home. Let’s keep the tradition going and wear our uniform with pride!
Wellbeing Week
At Holy Spirit Infants Abermain, Wellbeing Week is all about fostering happiness, confidence, and connection in our early learners! Through enjoyable activities like wearing comfy clothes, sharing a movie and popcorn afternoon, and playing board games with friends, we create opportunities for students to relax, engage, and thrive. When children feel good on the inside, they’re more eager to learn, explore, and grow—both academically and socially.

Assistant Principal News Kurri Kurri

Dear Parents and Carers,
We are pleased to invite you to our upcoming Parent/Teacher Interviews, which will take place in Week 10 of Term 2. These meetings are an important part of our partnership in supporting your child’s learning and development.
Parent/Teacher Interviews provide a valuable opportunity for you to connect with your child’s teacher, gain insight into their academic progress, social development, and classroom engagement. Teachers will share specific examples of your child’s strengths, areas for growth, and how they are tracking in their learning.
These conversations are also a time for you to ask questions, share any relevant information about your child, and work collaboratively with teachers to support learning both at school and at home. When families and schools work together, children benefit in countless ways — with improved confidence, motivation, and a deeper sense of connection to their learning.
Interview Details:
📅 Date(s): Week 10 – before and after school – 30/6/25-04/07/25
🕒 Time: Please see specific teacher availability
📍 Location: Classrooms
📲 Bookings: Will open via Compass on Wednesday 11th of June
We strongly encourage all parents to attend. Whether your child is thriving, needing a bit of extra support, or somewhere in between, this is a perfect time to celebrate their achievements and plan together for their continued growth.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to seeing you at the interviews and continuing our shared commitment to your child’s success.

Faith Life at Holy Spirit Schools

Holy Spirit Infants Abermain
Holy Spirit Infants joyfully acknowledged the Feast of Pentecost – the Church’s Birthday, a significant event in the Catholic calendar where we commemorate the Holy Spirit moving amongst us. With the Holy Spirit as our emblem, the day was filled with vibrant activities and heartfelt moments and connected wonderfully to our celebration Catholic Schools Week and its theme of Hope!
The children attended a joyful mass celebration, where they participated beautifully, embracing the spirit of Pentecost with enthusiasm and reverence, the jubilant singing and prayer, helped us reflect on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and our theme of Hope. Adding to the festive spirit, the children wore a colourful collection of flame-coloured clothing, to symbolise the tongues of fire that appeared above the apostles' heads at the first Pentecost.
Following the mass, the children engaged in a range of fantastic faith formation opportunities. Through interactive activities, they learned about the significance of Pentecost and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit and enjoyed time to give thanks, write prayers, meditate and celebrate their own gifts. This experience not only deepened their understanding of their faith but also fostered a sense of community and shared belief that is central to our Catholic School community.
The students collected stamps in their Pilgrimage Passports to reaffirm the spiritual journey we take together in the Holy Spirit School community and as part of our reflection on the Jubilee year- which is an ancient tradition, celebrated every 25 years with the theme of Hope. As Pope Francis noted the jubilee is an opportunity for us Pilgrim people who need moments of greater intensity to encourage and sustain hope as the constant companion that guides our steps, an opportunity to reorient, refresh and renew our relationship with God and our neighbours. This opportunity was encountered with such joy and enthusiasm by the students – and to wrap up our retreat experience we wished the Church a very ‘Happy Birthday!’ and enjoyed cake together.
Find out more about the Jubilee Year and Pilgrims of Hope here: Join us at the Diocesan Launch of the Jubilee Year
In the final session of our day, we welcomed our loved ones into our classrooms and enjoyed an opportunity to acknowledge Pentecost and Catholic Schools Week further together through a range of activities centred upon the gifts of the Holy Spirit and them of Hope! We are grateful for the participation and enthusiasm of our students and community; we look forward to more enriching experiences that celebrate our faith and the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost and CSW celebrations
On Thursday 5th June Holy Spirit Schools joined together to celebrate Pentecost and Catholic Schools week. A big thank you to those parents who could attend. We appreciate you coming along and sharing in these celebrations with us.
What is Pentecost?
Pentecost is a Christian feast day which is celebrated 50 days after Easter. It marks the official end of the Easter season. The word Pentecost is rooted in Greek for “fiftieth.”
When we think of Pentecost, we are often reminded of the story of the Holy Spirit visiting the Apostles in a room as little flames above their heads. The day of Pentecost marks the beginning of the Christian church (the community/people) and their mission. It is often known as ‘the birthday of the church’ as Pentecost marks the beginning of the apostles (who filled with courage and the Holy Spirit) started sharing the Good News with others.
Pentecost is a special feast day for both schools because of our namesake- Holy Spirit.
What is Catholic Schools Week?
During the 2nd June to 6th June we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. It invites us to pause and reflect on the values that make our Catholic school. We are reminded that school is not just a place for learning but about developing friendships, challenging ourselves, getting to know each other- both students, families and staff.
We are a family of faith, hope, respect and love for our God and for each other. This week is a time to celebrate the success and joy that makes our school such a wonderful place where we walk side by side, supporting one another and growing in faith.
Each year for Catholic Schools Week there is a theme and the theme this year is ‘Pilgrims of Hope.’ Pilgrims reminds us that we are on a journey- teachers, students and families and hope is what helps us to move forward even when we are faced with difficulties and challenges.
Our School Celebrations
Families were invited to mass and into our classrooms (in the morning at Kurri Kurri and in the afternoon at Abermain) to see what we have been learning about. Children wore red, orange and yellow-coloured clothes and accessories as these colours represent the symbol of a flame and the colour of Pentecost.
Thank you to those parents who came along to open classrooms in the morning we love sharing what we are doing with you. Thank you to Mrs Lynch and our Mini Vinnies leaders for their assistance with selling our red treats at lunch time. The money raised from the treat sale will go towards the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Thank you also to Mrs McFarlane and Year 6 for their efforts in coordinating the Mass.

Sports News Abermain

Our school Athletics Carnival was such a fun day with high spirits! It was lovely seeing our Year 2 students involved in a variety of track and field events and cheering for one another. They all demonstrated great sportsmanship and tried their personal best in all events. Although our first day was cancelled due to extreme weather, we had the opportunity to continue the fun this past week. Whether they were racing down the track in 100m, 200m, 800m or 1500m or launching a long jump, they all supported one another which allowed all competitors to share their enjoyment.
Thank you to all the parent spectators who supported and cheered on their own children and others, it was magnificent seeing our community come together.
Congratulations to all Year 2 students!

Highlights in Sport
Touch Trials
Diocesan Touch Football Trials
Congratulations to Kade, Sophie M and Sophie P who proudly represented our school at the Diocesan Touch Football Trials held in Newcastle during Week 3. Competing against students from schools across the Diocese, all three showcased outstanding skill, teamwork and sportsmanship. We are thrilled to announce that Kade, Sophie M and Sophie P have been selected to represent the Diocese at the upcoming Polding Trials in Port Macquarie in Week 9. We wish them all the best!

Dio Cross Country
Unfortunately, the Diocesan Cross Country event was cancelled after being postponed several times. This decision was made due to a range of factors, including safety concerns, participation inequities, venue availability, and traffic management issues around Maitland Park. Whilst this was disappointing—particularly for students who had been training—the wellbeing of all involved remained the top priority. Catholic Schools NSW worked on a fair selection process to nominate students for the CSNSW Polding Cross Country competition.
We would like to acknowledge Ryka Tipper, who was invited to represent our Diocese at the Polding Cross Country Carnival last Wednesday at the Sydney Equestrian Centre. We congratulate Ryka on this achievement and hope he enjoyed the experience.
Athletics Carnival
Our recent School Athletics Carnival was a truly eventful day filled with energy, enthusiasm, and outstanding sportsmanship. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all students and families for their flexibility and understanding as we made necessary adjustments due to the weather. A special thank you also goes to our wonderful parent helpers who generously gave their time to support the smooth running of the day – your assistance was greatly appreciated!
Despite the challenges, the carnival was filled with smiles, team spirit, and exceptional displays of encouragement and support among students. The sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship on the day was a credit to all involved.
Unfortunately, the weather meant we had to call the carnival short. However, we are very grateful to families for their support of the make-up session, which was held the following Monday. It was a perfect sunny day, and 66 students attended. We were able to run through the remaining events smoothly and efficiently, ensuring all students had the opportunity to compete.
The Lower Hunter Regional Carnival will be held on 2nd July 2025 at the Maitland Athletics Complex. Students who have qualified to progress to the regional level will be announced next week. Further details, including event information and permission, will be shared via a Compass event early next week.
Well done to all our athletes – your efforts and sportsmanship made this carnival one to remember!

NSWPSSA Girls AFL
This week, Sophie M and Sophie P proudly represented the Mid North Coast and Hunter Inland team at the NSWPSSA AFL Girls Pathway Championships in Blacktown. The team had a strong start to the tournament and went on to win the gold medal in the grand final—an outstanding achievement!
A special congratulations to Sophie M, who was named co-captain of the team and celebrated her third consecutive gold medal at the tournament—an incredible accomplishment.
Both Sophie M and Sophie P have also been selected to represent NSW at the upcoming School Sport Australia Championships in Maroochydore, Queensland, this August.
We are extremely proud of their dedication, sportsmanship, and success both on and off the field. Well done, girls!

Polding Girls Rugby 7s
Congratulations to Sophie M, who recently travelled to Blacktown to compete in the Girls Rugby 7s as a member of the Polding team. Sophie represented the team with great determination, skill and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. We are incredibly proud of her efforts and the way she continues to represent our school and diocese at such a high level. Well done, Sophie!

Netball Clinic Sport Sessions
This term, we are excited to have coaches from Netball NSW delivering netball sessions as part of the Sporting Schools Grants initiative. These sessions will run over four weeks and focus on developing students' fundamental movement skills, including catching, passing, dodging, and footwork, all incorporated through fun and engaging netball activities.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Excursion
On Wednesday 28th May, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from both Abermain and Kurri Kurri, attended the Cessnock City Councils Reconciliation Week event. Students travelled by bus to Cessnock Performing Arts Centre where the event was held, exploring the theme of ‘Bridging Now to Next’.
Before the event started, students had the opportunity to engage in activities in the foyer area of the Performing Arts Centre. They got to contribute to a collaborative Aboriginal artwork, using their hands and paint. As well as learn about Aboriginal tools that were on display.
When we went into the auditorium, we listened to a Wonarua Elder who welcomed us to Country before we got to listen to a variety of speakers who spoke about Reconciliation week, its significance and shared personal stories about their experiences.
They were excited to see a group from Gillieston Heights Public School perform a traditional Aboriginal dance, representing their local culture. They also got to listen to the Digeridoo and students were asked to guess which animal was being represented when it was played. They all got the Kookaburra correct!
Elexa (Year 1) – “The kids doing the dance was really fun!”
Finlay (Kinder) – “I enjoyed listening to the man who played the Digeridoo”
Jak (Year 2) - “It was great to see the different tools, I also got to hold possum fur”
Lillian (Year 6)- “I felt happy and sad when the lady talked about meeting her husband's family and then realised that his foster sister was her actual real sister.”
Hudson (Year 4)- “I got emotional when the Aboriginal lady talked about how she had to sit in the front row of the movies because the Aboriginal children had to sit by themselves and not with white people”.
Rhylen (Year 4)- “I loved watching the dancing and the didgeridoo player from Gillieston Primary School”

How We Support Our Learners at Holy Spirit Infants
How We Support Our Learners at Holy Spirit Infants
At Holy Spirit Infants school, we want every child to feel happy, safe, and ready to learn. We know that all students are different. Some may need extra help with reading, writing, or math. Others may need support with their feelings or behaviour. That’s why we have lots of ways to help every student do their best.
We have wonderful Learning Support Assistants who work with students in small groups or one-on-one. They help children who need a little extra practice with schoolwork. Sometimes they work in the classroom, and other times they work in quiet spaces to give students the support they need.
We are also fortunate to have two experienced Learning Support Teachers who play a central role in supporting our students. These teachers provide specialised support to students who need extra help, both in small group settings and individually. They work closely with families, teachers, and other professionals to create learning plans and apply learning strategies that are both evidence-based and child-centred.
To help students understand and manage their emotions, we use something called the Zones of Regulation. This tool teaches children how to name their feelings and learn ways to calm down or stay focused. For example, if a student feels upset or angry, they might be in the "red zone." If they feel calm and ready to learn, they are in the "green zone." We teach students how to move from one zone to another in healthy ways.
Sometimes, a student might feel overwhelmed or upset during the school day. When this happens, they can visit our Reset Space in the Learning Centre. This is a quiet, peaceful place where students can take a break and get support from a staff member. In the Reset Space, students learn how to calm down, think about their feelings, and get ready to go back to class.
Across the whole school, we use something called Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). This program helps students learn the school expectations and how to make good choices. We teach and reward positive choices, like being kind, listening to teachers, and trying your best. PBL helps students feel proud of doing the right thing, not just for rewards, but because it feels good inside.
All of these supports work together to help every student grow and learn. Whether a child needs help with schoolwork, emotions, or behaviour, we are here to support them. We believe every child can succeed, and we are proud to work with families to make that happen.
Penny Lloyd, Learning Support Teacher
