Executive Principal News
All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for
mothers young and old.
We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need;
May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy.
We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us;
May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways.
We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict;
May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away.
We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion.
We remember mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love.
Amen.
Dear Families
Our term 2 has started well with all students across both schools returning to learning so settled and happy. We began the term with a reflective prayer at both schools where we remembered and thanked God for the Holy Father Pope Francis who entered into Eternal Life on Easter Monday. Pope Francis was to so many an inclusive and loving leader who was focused on the poor and marginalised; he was a champion for peace in our troubled world and an advocate for the dignity of all human beings. The attached article link below is a wonderful reflection on Francis' papacy. May he rest in peace.
On a personal note, I would like to acknowledge the leadership of our RECs (Miss Spencer at Kurri and Mrs Haines at Abermain) for their creativity, hours of preparation and coordination of the Holy Week liturgies and prayers at both Kurri and Abermain. Our schools are truly blessed.
At Kurri every grade prepared a significant part of the events of Holy Week to share with the school and wider parish community. It was a truly moving and so beautifully portrayed with great singing and the students acting out specific parts of the story so very well. As the week went on, I observed the students in Yrs 3-6 grow more and more engaged; more and more reverent and more reflective with each event portrayed. Thank you to all the students, teachers and support staff for helping everyone feel a great connection to the events of long ago.
At Abermain it was Kindergarten who led everyone on a journey to Jerusalem with Jesus on a donkey. Year 2 had palms waving and cloaks on the ground as all students, staff and parents walked to short way to the church. There Year 1 and Year 2 portrayed the events of the Last Supper, the arrest of Jesus and the crucifixion. Again, our students rose to the occasion with amazing singing and heartfelt efforts to portray the events. Thank you to our students, teachers and support staff for preparing and creating an engaging and memorable Holy Week experience. Wow! Our thanks to all the parents and grandparents who were able to join us for these important liturgical events.
This week our thoughts turn to Mother's as we look to celebrate the role of mothers in and mother figures in our lives. The Virgin Mary is perhaps the most widely recognized and venerated saint in all of Catholic tradition. As the humble handmaid of the Lord who became the mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary is a model and an intercessor for all God’s people. Mary, the Mother of Jesus is our mother too. St. Monica born in the 4th century, is recognized as the patron saint of mothers. Her faith and dedication to motherhood played a pivotal role in the spiritual formation of one of the most brilliant philosophers and well-known saints of all time – Saint Augustine, her son. This week we pray for all mothers especially at our school celebrations and we wish you all a Happy Mother's Day where families can celebrate their love for you! May God bless each of you.

New Safety procedures at Kurri and Abermain
We would like to outline a change to our procedures at both schools when parents or visitors wish to enter the school. Each school has a front gate with a safety lock mechanism. When parents/visitors/contractors wish to enter the school grounds, they will need to press the silver button on the gate. This button alerts the admin staff that someone is at the gate and they will then ask you to give your name and the purpose of your visit to the school. Each school gate has a video camera attached which provides a clear view however, we need parents and visitors to speak into the microphone clearly.
At Kurri, our staff member may ask you to wait at the gate depending on the purpose of your visit. If collecting your child early for an appointment, it would be helpful if you called ahead or emailed admin please. Your child will be called to the office, our staff member will sign the child out and bring them out to the gate to you. Please do not enter the school grounds when students are walking to or from the field as you will be asked to wait at the gate. Please do not think we are being rude asking you to wait at the gate, we are in fact following an important new safety protocol. This will take a little time for everyone to get used to.
At Abermain, if collecting your child early for an appointment, it would be helpful if you called ahead or emailed admin please. Your child will be called/walked to the office at that time in readiness for your visit. All visitors to Abermain must continue to go directly to the office please.
At both schools it is imperative that parents/carers ensure the gate is CLOSED behind you when you leave.
If we all work together and are vigilant with these gate procedures, we keep everyone safe.
Upgrades at Kurri
At the end of term 1, a new PA system was installed at Kurri which enables the bells to be heard on the playground and communication across all areas of the school is now enabled. The upgrade provided us with a state of the art sound system so we can use the microphone almost anywhere in the school. Also installed was a new Emergency Evacuation and Lockdown alarm and both schools will undergo emergency drills in the next two weeks.
At Kurri we also had a new phone system installed into every classroom and the office areas. This will enable greater opportunities for communication and for staff to contact parents from their classroom rather than having the constraints of sitting either in the front office or the staff room. The paging system was used this week and the Year 6 students all stopped, searching for where the sound was coming from. It is the new speaker system in the roof.
Year 5 and 6 building works update
Year 5 and 6 building project whereby glass bifold glass doors are being installed which will separate the space into four classrooms when closed and create a large gathering space when open, is set to begin later this term. There will be some disruption to some Stage 3 classes during this time as they may need to relocate; building noise and the loss of some playground space as the builders create a compound for materials. We are hoping that things will be underway at the end of week 8. It is a long awaited project for the school.
ANZAC DAY MARCH
In 2025, Holy Spirit Schools saw the largest turn out of students marching at the local ANZAC Day march in Kurri Kurri so far. Our student leaders from both schools were present and laid beautiful wreaths at the cenotaph on behalf of our schools. We had students from Kindergarten and Year 1 and 2 wearing their great grandparents' medals and from Year 3-6 students proudly marching, as we paid our respects to those who valiantly gave their lives to fight for our freedom. Thank you, parents/carers, for bringing the children along to this important community event. It is important that we keep the tradition alive and educate future generations. Thank you to our Kurri leaders: George, Xanthe, Henry and Sophie and to our Abermain leaders Caleb, Maverick, Carter, Zoe, Pippa and Georgia. A very special moment was when the National Anthem was played and the Infants students burst into song. Great effort Holy Spirit!
Congratulations
We would like to congratulate two of our teachers who have been selected and received a scholarship to complete higher studies in Religious Education. Congratulations to Mrs Sarah Haines (Abermain) and Mr Brodie Flynn (Abermain). Both teachers are studying Graduate Certificate in Religious Education and we are proud that they have both received a scholarship from Maitland/Newcastle Catholic Schools to undertake these higher studies. Well done! Mrs Angela Waters is also studying and will complete a Graduate Certificate in Mission and Culture. Our teachers are truly life, long learners!
EASTER RAFFLES and EASTER HAT PARADE
Our sincere thanks for the generosity of our school communities when we held wonderful Easter Raffles at both Kurri and Abermain. At Abermain our annual Easter Hat making morning with parent helpers and then the parade with some fabulous creations and stunning hats, was great fun. We also loved the preschoolers who joined in. Parents/carers were very generous with donating prizes and purchasing tickets. We do not do much fundraising, especially in such tight economic times, however your generous donations have already been put toward the following items for the children.
At Abermain a total of $1,519.00 was raised. We are saving for some additional playground equipment upgrades for the students and this amount is so helpful as we will need substantial funds for eg a spider web style climbing feature which will take some time.
At Kurri a total of $1528.00 was raised. We have purchased sport equipment and a game called 9 squares which the students at Kurri enjoyed exploring on Tuesday and every subsequent day, with great delight. It's a mix between volleyball and handball and keeps the students engaged fully for their entire play time!
Change to Winter Uniform/wearing jewellery to school
We would like all students to wear their Winter Uniform from Monday 10th May please.
Sport uniform at Kurri remains the same on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Abermain it is Wednesdays and students have the tracksuit pants and top.
Primary girls wearing the new skirt wear navy stockings, a long sleeved blouse under their jacket/jumper for winter or else navy pants, long sleeved shirt and jacket. Girls also have a winter tunic to wear. Boys transition to the long sleeve shirt, school tie, jacket and long pants. A reminder that cargo pants are not part of our school uniform. Thank you for sending your child/children looking extra smart!
A reminder about suitable jewellery for school. Many of our older students (Yr 5 and 6) are wearing hoop earrings to school which are not part of the school uniform. Such lovely earrings are best worn on the weekends or to special events please. Our students are very active at break times. Hoop earrings are not part of any sport uniform, so parents/carers please support the school by ensuring your child is not wearing hoop earrings to school as they are not part of the school uniform either. In sports, such as basketball, 9 square, netball and even soccer, these larger earrings puts the wearer at an increased risk of injury. Our students are in primary school and must adhere to the uniform policy .
Bracelets, necklaces, anklets - these items of jewellery are again, not part of our school uniform and as such, should not be worn to school. A watch, a signet ring, a gold/silver bangle, a necklace with a cross are all items that are agreed may be worn. Any additional items of jewellery will result in the student being asked to remove it and take it home.
MAT LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM TERM 3 KURRI
Our Primary school has been invited to participate in a University of Newcastle Study. Whilst a program the "MAT Program" is being delivered each week at St Patrick's Cessnock, our Primary School at Kurri will be part of the study. Our students in Stage 3 will be the "control" group in the study, whereby we will not be delivering any special programs to the students in term 2 in resilience, personal or social capabilities. The students and staff will undergo an anonymous survey so data can be measured. Then in term 3, our Stage 3 students will participate in a ten week program delivered at school once a week. This program has been successful in several other Catholic schools and we are excited to be able to not only assist the University with some research, but then be able to have our students participate in the program. Please see more information in the attached link below. It is going to be a terrific opportunity.
Have a great fortnight,

Attendance
A letter was sent to families during the school holidays to inform them of their child’s attendance for 2025 so far. With reference to the graphic above, how is your child progressing with their attendance?
Consistent school attendance is crucial for your child's academic progress, well-being, and personal development. It helps establish a structured routine, encourages meaningful connections, and cultivates essential life skills such as time management and resilience.
Absences can lead to learning gaps and make it more challenging to keep up. Moreover, attending school regularly meets legal requirements and strengthens your child's educational foundation.
We appreciate your commitment to their attendance—it contributes significantly to their academic and social growth and future success.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) focus for the first two weeks of Term 2 is part of the "I am responsible" domain:
"I care for the school environment!"
For early learners, being responsible and caring for the school environment means understanding that their actions can help keep their school a clean, safe, and enjoyable place for everyone. Responsibility at this age is about small but meaningful actions, such as:
-Keeping things tidy – Putting away toys, books, and supplies after using them, and throwing rubbish in the bin.
- Respecting school property – Handling classroom materials, playground equipment, and school furniture with care.
- Helping others – Assisting classmates, sharing, and being kind to teachers and peers.
- Caring for nature – Watering plants, not damaging trees or gardens, and learning to recycle.
- Being mindful of energy and water – Turning off lights when not needed and not wasting water when washing hands.
Teaching students these values help them develop a sense of responsibility, pride in their school, and respect for the environment.
Term 2 Sport – Soccer
Soccer is a beloved sport at Holy Spirit Infants School Abermain, and this term we are lucky to have a coach from NSW Football guiding our Wednesday sport lessons. Our experienced coach, Craig, will help us refine essential soccer skills, including kicking, trapping, passing, and tackling—while also fostering teamwork and fair play. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students to build confidence and enjoy the game!

School Improvement Plan Goal
As part of our School Improvement Plan (SIP), we have a school wide goal across both Holy Spirit Kurri Kurri and Abermain, “to embed consistent pedagogical practice responding to effective analysis of data across KLAs”. As part of this goal, we have been focussing on creating a consistent approach to the teaching of mathematics.
To support staff in achieving this goal, we have engaged Fiona Foley from the Mathematics Association of New South Wales (MANSW). Fiona is an education consultant who currently, with MANSW, who focuses on enhancing student engagement and outcomes by building teacher capacity in content, pedagogy, and research-based strategies. Fiona delivered professional learning to our staff at a staff meeting on Tuesday 8th of April and then spent Wednesday the 9th of April working with small groups of teachers in and out of classrooms. Fiona taught lessons to 3B and Year 6. Fiona also spent Tuesday working with K-2 staff at Abermain.
Teachers are incorporating the strategies and activities shared by Fiona into their teaching programs.

ANZAC Day- Kurri Kurri Service
On Friday 25th April, many students from Holy Spirit Infants and Holy Spirit Primary participated in the ANZAC Day March and Service in Kurri Kurri. Students proudly represented their schools and marched to the Kurri Kurri War Memorial. Student leaders from both schools laid wreaths on behalf of our school community. It was a lovely service honouring ANZAC Day, one of Australia's most important national days of remembrance. Thank you to all the students who attended for their respect and reverence during the service. Thank you to our families for participating in this special day. Holy Spirit Schools were the best represented in the area -well done!

Anzac Day School Liturgies
Holy Spirit Schools acknowledged and commemorated ANZAC Day during our first week back at school.
We remember those brave men and women who served in war and who did not return to receive the grateful thanks of the nation. We also think of those gallant men and women who are currently in the Peacekeeping Forces and on humanitarian missions, who defend and assist the vulnerable.
Holy Spirit Infants- celebrated with a prayer reflection led by Mrs Haines and student leaders on Friday 2nd May.
Holy Spirit Primary- commemorated Anzac Day on Tuesday 29th April with each class holding a liturgy within their classrooms.

POPE FRANCIS and EASTER
Pope Francis
Welcome back to Term 2! I hope that you all managed to find some joyous times across the school holidays (of course among the magnificent mayhem) with friends and family.
It feels strange to have entered the season of Easter, which is traditionally a time of hope, joy and celebration with the sad loss of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Pope Francis was an example of authentic leadership. He acted in a way people wanted to follow. Prioritising the poor, including the marginalised, compelling us to care for the environment and standing up for truth. It is in times like these that we can lean into our faith, placing the hope of Easter in our God and praying that Pope Francis’ legacy is carried forward.
On Monday of Week 1, our students prayed for the Pope through the intercession of Mary who held a special place in Pope Francis’ heart at both Holy Spirit schools. Now Pope Francis has been laid to rest the College of Cardinals have entered the conclave, held in the Sistine Chapel and will remain shut off to the outside world completely until a two-thirds majority vote occurs, to enable a decision on who is to be our next Pope.

WATCH NOW: Fr Greg discusses the Conclave
Easter - Eastertide
Holy Spirt Schools celebrated Easter in their first week back this term, with Kurri Kurri engaging in a Liturgy, beautifully led by Year 6 on Monday. Whilst Abermain shared in a joyous liturgy with Yr2 confidently leading us through the Emmaus story and really highlighting the joy of the Easter season. The Road to Emmaus is a story of hope for the Easter season and beyond as it illustrates how God's presence and grace can transform despair and disillusionment into renewed faith and understanding. The disciples' initial despair after Jesus' crucifixion is juxtaposed with his appearance to them through his blessing and sharing the bread and wine, which eventually rekindles their hope and compels them to share the good news of his resurrection.
For us as part of Holy Spirit schools and the universal Church, Easter doesn’t finish when the Easter long weekend is over, or the Easter eggs have run out! Eastertide (the Easter season) has just started. It goes for 50 days finishing with Pentecost (which means 50 days). So, whilst the secular world moves on from Easter to the next thing, the faithful continue to celebrate new life in the risen Christ. 40 days after Easter the church celebrates the Ascension of Jesus where he is taken up into heaven. Shortly after this we celebrate Pentecost – the Church’s Birthday – another very important time for our Holy Spirit schools, as Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. It was this that empowered them to take the Holy Spirit out to the world and pursue God’s mission. Pentecost can be an invitation to all people to open their eyes to the mystery of life and love.

Highlights in Sport
NRL Gala Day
In the final week of Term 1, two Stage 2 representative teams attended the U10s Knights NRL Gala Day. The teams were accompanied by Mr Collingwood and Mrs Waters, who spoke very highly of the students and the way they conducted themselves throughout the day. Our teams showed great sportsmanship and proudly represented our school.

Unfortunately, the Stage 3 students were unable to attend their gala day due to the weather, as the event was postponed. We are still awaiting confirmation of a new date for the gala day and will update you once it's been rescheduled.
Sporting Schools Sessions
This term, our school received a sports grant from the Australian Sports Commission to support Rugby League sessions through PlayNRL. Over four weeks, students participated in fun and active lessons led by visiting coaches, including NRLW player Kayla Romaniuk. The sessions focused on skills such as passing, catching, kicking, and dodging. Students thoroughly enjoyed the program and loved learning and developing their skills with the help of professional coaches.

Later this term, coaches from Netball NSW will visit our school to run four fun sessions. These will happen towards the end of the term, and students are excited to join in, learn new netball skills, and continue to build on their skills.

One of the highlights is the new Nine Square game, a fun and engaging activity where students work in teams to pass a ball through a series of squares, aiming to eliminate players from the game. The students were thrilled with the new additions, and we hope they enjoy using the equipment during their break times and sports sessions.
